Hungarian National Dance Ensemble: Kalotaszeg [HU]

Friday | 30th July | 21:00

Zoltán Zsuráfszky, Kossuth award winning choreographer, inspired by the original dance collections of Dr György Martin and in honour of his great works, started the Living Dance Archive series a few years ago. The series revolutionised staged Hungarian folk dancing and showed an example on how to create performances with artistic integrity by the perfect learning of authentic folkdancing, thereby preserving the “clean source”. Besides presenting the deeply studied and learnt authentic dance processes and outstanding dancers of a region, the series gives audiences a chance to wonder at the richness and beauty of their own musical and dance traditions. Every profound, honest moment in the performance is testimony to the artist’s devoted love of folklore.

The series consists of five parts entitled Kalotaszeg, Mezőség, Bonchida Three Times, Gyimes and Szatmár. These form the five-week-long “Living Dance Archives” based on collections by Dr György Martin and colleagues and Zoltán Zsuráfszky, and performed by the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble.

With our Kalotaszeg performance we would like to thank the makers and all participants of the Türe talking film; those Hungarian, Romanian and Roma dancers and musicians who preserved and passed on this wonderful dance and music culture to us.
